The Art of The Scatter Cushion

Whilst our sofas are far from Plain Janes, sometimes they need a little extra flair to truly make an impact — and that’s where the cushion comes in.  Here is House of Furn’s simple guide to mastering the art of statement-making cushion placement.

Embrace Odd Numbers
When it comes to cushions, odd numbers are your friend.  Three or five cushions feel more natural and relaxed than an even number.  Mix up your styles: pair a bold print with a solid colour on one end and repeat on the other, then introduce a subtle pattern to tie them together.  Don’t shy away from texture — combine velvet, linen, and knits to add depth and dimension.

Curate Your Colour Palette
Select two or three hues from your overall palette, perhaps highlighting a tone that appears less prominently in your flowers or table settings.  Amalfi in the garden?  Opt for greens and soft neutrals that blend beautifully with the surroundings or echo a vibrant bloom behind the sofa for a lively pop of colour.  Sienna in the library?  Draw inspiration from the book spines on the shelves.  Norton in the marquee?  Go bold — match your cushions to your floral arrangements for a cohesive and confident look.

Don’t Forget the Armchairs
Sofas often steal the spotlight when it comes to cushion styling, but armchairs deserve attention too.  A single, well-chosen cushion can enhance an armchair’s aesthetic and make it feel part of the design story.  Whether your style is classic or contemporary, avoid overcrowding — one cushion, placed centrally or slightly to the side, is just right.

Create a Cosy Corner
Need a quiet nook for a guest who’s ready for a breather?  Position an armchair in a tucked-away spot, drape a throw over the back, add a small side table and perhaps a book — and, of course, a soft, inviting cushion for comfort.

Whether you’re aiming for balanced harmony or bold contrast, cushions are your friend and the easiest, most versatile way to achieve that coveted wow factor.
